As we head offshore on Jack Setton’s stayless catboat Freset, a 32ft Frers designed to launch from a mothership, I have to remind myself he’s 76. If I’m still out sailing every day, looking for new ideas, and my mind is as sharp when I am of a similar age, I’ll be a happy man. This is a person who has had, or could own, yachts of any size, but gets as much pleasure from the smallest ones. His pedal-assisted 12ft Hobie trimaran remains one of his favourites for its purity of sailing close to the water, and he loves his Herreshoff dinghy.
