I thought I knew what to expect, but within seconds it was clear I didn’t. While the videos of the modern breed of IMOCA 60s looks like they have just got quicker, the reality on board is far more striking. As we barrelled down the drag race course outside Lorient, Guyot Environment, (originally Hugo Boss in the 2016/17 Vendée Globe), was pressing on its leeward foil as the speed started to climb. As we accelerated, the giant carbon foil developed more righting moment, adding to our speed – which in turn drove an increase in apparent wind. And so the cycle continued, albeit in just a few seconds, only ending when the drag matched the thrust. Yet the weirdest sensation was not the rapid acceleration – that’s basic multihull stuff…

ELECTRIC CODE 0 FURLER FOR RETROFITS Furling systems for reaching sails have transformed the ease with which these sails can be handled, with the result that many more cruising yachts now have Code 0s and furling asymmetric spinnakers than would have carried a conventional spinnaker a decade or two ago. However, manual furling systems on large yachts can still require considerable effort. When we tested Beneteau’s Oceanis Yacht 60 (see YW October 2022 issue) the 140m2 Code 0 was on the limit for one person to handle manually and the operation was much easier, though still somewhat energetic, for two. My set is far from new, but still offers excellent insulation, while zipped ventilation slits reduce overheating when working hard. They are insulated, windproof and breathable garments that can be worn as an outer layer in relatively tame conditions, or under foul weather kit in more inclement weather. Privilège sold French catamaran manufacturer Privilège Marine SAS has been bought by a consortium led by long-time CEO Gilles Wagner. Privilège Marine had been part of the HanseYachts Group since 2019, but HanseYachts AG sold its stake in the French catamaran manufacturer earlier this year as part of a shake-up of its portfolio. ARC and ARC+ Entries open Entries are open for the 2023 ARC and ARC+ rallies. The 2023 edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers will start from Las Palmas to St Lucia on 19 November, following its usual programme of pre-start activities from 6 November. Momentum is building among the Challengers for the 37th America’s Cup, with activity increasing among all the teams, while the new official ‘recon’ programme means all the teams’ launches and sailing days are observed and recorded. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was first to sail their LEQ12 test boat, a scaled down foiling monohull which may be used in addition to the AC40. Despite its ‘dazzle ship’ livery, it bears closest resemblance to the ETNZ winning AC75 from last year. British sailor and yacht builder Jeremy Rogers MBE, famous for co-creating the iconic Contessa 32 and Contessa 26, has died at the age of 85. Rogers was born in September 1937, and as a child his mother evacuated him and his brothers to rural Canada during World War II. There they occupied themselves during snow-bound Ottawa winters building model boats. After the war the family returned to the UK, settling in Keyhaven just outside Lymington, where Jeremy and his younger brother Jonathan began sailing Cadets. He built his first dinghy at primary school, making a Cadet while at Clayesmore School in Dorset, aged just 10. After leaving school, Rogers completed a five-year apprenticeship with esteemed wooden boat builder Jack Chippendale, before setting out on his own, opening the Jeremy Rogers…

I’m not a counter. I’m not the sort of guy to add up things like ocean miles sailed (I get asked that continually and don’t have a clue what the answer is, other than ‘a lot’) or how many around the world races I’ve done. At least the latter is easy to remember, it’s the fingers on one hand. Another one is how many times I have been to Antarctica and places like South Georgia. For these I have also lost count. After a fast downwind passage from French Polynesia, we sailed into Fijian waters, just under 12 months after setting off from Lymington in the UK. Once we had cleared customs and immigration, met up with cruising friends and enjoyed the hospitality of the Savusavu Yacht Club, we took a moment to reflect on what we’d just done as a family: we’d achieved our dream to sail to the other side of the world. A few months later and it still feels pretty surreal and very special. Three French expedition sailors have completed a remarkable high latitude passage in a 23ft inflatable catamaran. Sébastien Roubinet, Jimmy Hery and Éric André set off from Banks Island, in the Arctic archipelago of Canada, at the end of June and spent three months covering more than 1,500 miles of Arctic sea and ice without assistance, before ending their voyage in Greenland’s Nares Strait in late October. The trio became the first to sail to the north of seven Canadian islands, also rounding Cape Columbia, the northernmost tip of Canadian land, on Ellesmere Island. Last month Jasmine Harrison, 23, became the first woman to swim the length of the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Harrison lived aboard her Bavaria 38 support yacht for four months, chasing every turn of the tide heading north. While Harrison was often in the water for up to six hours at a time, a rotating support team shepherded her over 900 miles.
