The Ocean Cleanup, a Dutch non-profit organisation hoping to rid the oceans of plastic, says it has proved its technology after harvesting 29 tonnes of plastic garbage in three months from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The organisation will now shifts its focus from testing to clean up and begin its full scale operation with the much larger ‘003’ system, which extends three times the length across the ocean (1.4 miles/2.5km), and is expected to be the blueprint design for scaling up to a fleet of ocean clean up vessels. The Clipper Round the World Race is scheduled to return after being cut short due to the Covid pandemic. The 2019/20 edition was postponed in March 2020 but organisers plan to restart in March 2022, with the aim of finishing in London that summer. The 11-boat fleet had to stop racing in Subic Bay, the Philippines, midway through the eight-leg around the world event. Clipper has now received a special event permit from the Philippines government to allow the race to restart there. Big wind conditions saw course records fall, with the MOD70 trimaran Argo taking multihull line honours and setting a new overall course record of just over 33 hours. The yachting industry lost one of its titans in early November when Christoph Rassy, of Hallberg-Rassy yachts fame, passed away at the age of 87. From starting out on his own in the mid-1960s to buying the Hallberg yard in 1972 and establishing one of the most pedigree names in boating, Christoph Rassy is perhaps the biggest name in Swedish yacht building history. Born in Germany in 1934, he grew up by a lake in Bavaria where he built model boats. An apprenticeship at a boatyard there fuelled a thirst to build and sail larger yachts and to move to the coast. Sweden appealed and Rassy found work at a yard in Nötesund in 1960. In his spare time he built yachts for himself, proved their worth on the racecourse,…

The long-awaited Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup was unveiled in November by the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and the Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia for the Royal Yacht Squadron. The Protocol confirmed some key details regarding the classes of boats to be used, crew eligibility, and preliminary regattas. It also contained some surprises such as antispying legislation, and eco initiatives. Yet some fundamental details – namely where, and when the 37th Cup will be held – are still missing. Those decisions now have to be confirmed by 31 March, 2022. The next edition of The Ocean Race will feature the longest Southern Ocean leg in the event’s 50-year history, a 12,750-mile marathon between Cape Town, South Africa to Itajaí, Brazil. The course change removes the New Zealand and China stopovers, replacing them instead with one non-stop monster leg. Richard Brisius, Ocean Race chairman, says the route has prompted crews from the original 1973/74 Whitbread Race to get in touch. “[They’re] saying that it will be an outstanding experience. The amount of time the crew will spend in the Southern Ocean, 30 or 40 days, is what they spent in the first race – because the boats were much slower then. “Of course, it will be testing and trying, but it’s also going to be a wonderful sporting and team experience.”…

The International Maxi Association (IMA) is to hold its first race series in the Caribbean in 2022. The IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge is open to all maxi yachts of 60ft-plus LOA and includes one offshore and three inshore events. The IMA Caribbean Maxi Challenge starts with the RORC Caribbean 600 on 21 February, the 600-mile offshore starting and finishing in Antigua. From there boats will head north-west to the St Maarten Heineken Regatta on 3-6 March, before making the short passage to St Barth for the Les Voiles de St Barth Richard Mille regatta on 17-23 April. Six skippers have set off on the first start of the first Globe 5.80 Transat, a new ocean racing class and event conceived by Don McIntyre, who is also behind the Golden Globe and Ocean Globe races. The Globe 5.80s are built from plans out of plywood epoxy, and may be either self-built or professionally constructed, but must meet safety standards for build quality. The first race for the new design sees the fleet of six set off from Lagos, Portugal, to Lanzarote before a 3,000-mile transat to Antigua. This latest Hallberg-Rassy is a near masterpiece. German Frers has once again sprinkled his fairy dust over the design, conjuring up a modern hull shape that will continually surprise you with the volume it provides, yet one with enough character and thoroughbred sailing credentials to make it identifiable as one of a family line which spans five decades. JOY SELF TAILING CLEAT Every so often an invention comes along that is so original and useful you’re amazed it was never thought of before. The Joy self-tailing cleat is that: a brilliant idea that solves a real problem of how to handle a mooring line under heavy load. The cleat is the brainchild of Italian engineer and serial inventor Cristiano Bonomi. In 2013, Bonomi tore a back muscle trying to moor his 35-tonne yacht and thought: there has to be an easier way. He began making a prototype with 3D polymer print technologies before testing and tweaking the design. This season event organisers are anticipating the return of most pre-Covid regattas and a full season of racing, with a shift of emphasis away from the shoreside parties and live music events towards on-the-water action. Major events including St Maarten Heineken Regatta, Antigua Sailing Week and the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Caribbean 600 race are all scheduled to return.
