Sir John Oakeley, one of Britain’s greatest sailors, has died aged 84.
A world champion, Olympic sailor and author, he was also a leading figure in the marine industry for more than 30 years, writes Sarah Norbury.
In 1957 he was champion of two of Britain’s most competitive dinghy classes, the Merlin Rocket and National 12. Just 24 years old, blonde-haired and ebullient, with outstanding ability, he was British sailing’s golden boy. He will be remembered for his hat-trick of Merlin championship victories in 1956, 1957 and 58.
He went on to win the Flying Dutchman World Championship in 1967 and twice won the European Championships. In 1968 he went to the Mexico Olympics as reserve and in 1972 represented Britain at the Olympics in Kiel, racing a Soling.
