The Fast 40+ class Rán VII (right) has been named World Sailing’s Boat of the Year. Niklas Zennstrom’s Swedish Carkeek-designed Carrington-built yacht was launched in April 2018, and has gone on to win every regatta in the Fast 40+ circuit. Winners of the Female Rolex World Sailor of the Year award were Carolijn Brouwer and Marie Riou for becoming the first female winners of the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2017-18 edition. Coffee and croissant in hand, we wandered along the old quay in Concarneau, past the imposing fortified old town and down onto the pontoons to put the modern, diminutive Django 7.70 through its paces over 24 hours, on the water and out of it as we dried out overnight. Out in the Baie de la Forêt with full sail set, the Django chomped at the bit, sailing effortlessly at speeds in the high single figures on a reach, and nudging over 6 knots close-hauled. Not bad for a boat of under 26ft. Her wide hull revealed her Breton heritage; she is after all a not-toodistant cousin of the of the Mini Transat pocket rockets. The first thing that strikes you about Amsterdam is its eclectic mix of the old and the new, with its labyrinth of waterways and stunning 17th-century narrow canal houses with their hues of red, orange and brown sitting alongside modern buildings, such as the angular and sweeping EYE Film Institute. The city is also a busy port. You might think that Amsterdam would not have much time for yachts, but think again: the Dutch capital, which has a long maritime heritage stretching back centuries, is still a welcome haven for sailors. For cruisers sailing from the UK, reaching Amsterdam is via the busy Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Canal) from IJmuiden, where the piers, with their distinctive horizontally striped lighthouses, stretch out into the North Sea. The Pomeranian Bodden are a series of lagoons along the south-western shore of the Baltic. They’re reed-fringed and secluded, part of a National Park, popular with anglers and a vital resting place for migratory birds, such as geese and cranes. The four most westerly bodden lie behind the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula – a 28-mile stretch of low cliffs, long beaches, dunes, holiday homes and naturism. From the seaward side (on passage perhaps from Warnemünde/Rostock to the island of Rügen or onwards to Poland) – the Darsser Ort lighthouse is a distinctive landmark, with no hint of the significant bodies of water immediately inland. The National Marine Aquarium (NMA) has laid five Stirling Eco-Moorings at Cawsand Bay in Cornwall as part of a joint project involving Princess Yachts and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). If successful, these types of moorings could be installed at other MPAs around the UK coast. They differ from standard moorings by using a two-metre screw pile rather than a traditional concrete block to anchor to the sea bed, helping to reduce any damage to the sea floor. Organisations campaigning to keep one of the world’s oldest sea-to-sea transits open in Scotland say more needs to be done to preserve it. The Forth & Clyde Canal, which links the Firth of Forth with the Firth of Clyde, is currently blocked after the closure of two road bridges at Twechar and Bonnybridge. Repairs are underway, funded by a £1.6m grant from the Scottish Government, and the route should reopen by April 2019. Dredging work is also planned. But, Keep Canals Alive! is concerned that there is also restricted opening along sections of the canal. Scottish Canals, which currently faces a £70m backlog in repairs, said it has limited openings as staff and resources can be better diverted towards maintenance work, and there were just 50 sea-to-sea transits in 2017.…

More than 2,000 exhibitors have been confirmed for one of the world’s biggest boat shows, boot Düsseldorf. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the German event, which is held across 16 exhibition halls, three of which are just dedicated to sailing boats. Yachts of all sizes and classes will be on display, with many of the large shipyards already securing exhibition space for 19-27 January 2019. The director of boot, Petros Michelidakis, said he expects to see more multihulls and larger yachts in 2019. ‘The biggest sailing yacht at boot 2018 was the Oyster 745 and we expect that we’ll see a few more yachts from Oyster and Nautor’s Swan yards on this scale at our anniversary.’ The theme of this year’s boot is Experience 360° Watersports.…

Two of Britain’s leading sailors, Alex Thomson and Phil Sharp, have announced they are ditching traditional diesel engines and instead are powering their boats without the use of fossil fuels. Alex Thomson has revealed his new multi-million pound HUGO BOSS, is being built with an integrated electric motor system, charged by solar panels located across the IMOCA 60’s deck. The racing team has partnered with the marine electric power and propulsion firm Oceanvolt. Alex Thomson Racing’s technical director, Ross Daniel, said finding the right solar panels were key in order to ensure the boat’s battery power did not fail and jeopardise Thomson’s safety during the 2020-2021 Vendée Globe race. The batteries are crucial for communication, navigation, and the running of both the onboard water maker and the autopilot. This means…

I am not usually one for tearing around the Solent looking for boats to race, but after a delightful sail on the Arcona 435 the Mr Toad in me had thoroughly taken over. Half the battle with flying a spinnaker is making sure you’ve got your setup right before you hoist. As we all know, the spinnaker halyard exits the mast above the forestay, while the two clews are sheeted back to the cockpit via blocks on the quarter, and the guys are led aft via blocks midships. The pole height is controlled by an uphaul at the mast and a downhaul, which is led aft via a block on the foredeck. The pole’s inboard end attaches to the mast, often on an adjustable track, and the windward guy passes through the jaws on the pole’s outboard end next to the windward clew. HATCH DROP There are several ways of doing this. The most common is to retrieve the spinnaker down the main hatch. Again, this is easier with twin sheets and guys. Hoist or unroll the jib. Take a bight of the lazy guy directly from the sail on the leeward side under the boom over the rail and into the main hatch. Ease the guy until the pole is just off the forestay. Steer downwind. The person lowering the halyard makes sure it is clear to run. At this point the cockpit crew can either let the guy and lazy sheet run through the pole on the windward side or the foredeck crew can ping the snap shackle releasing the sheet and guy from the windward corner of the sail. After the challenge of an Atlantic Crossing there’s no better reward than to cruise the Eastern Caribbean. But what happens when the sailing season ends? The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. For most cruisers it’s either haul out and tie down to return later in year, or head back to Europe via Bermuda and the Azores. However, that isn’t the case for everyone. In 2017 my partner Simon and I, together with our 10-month-old daughter Daisy and Scrumpy the Jack Russell, decided to sail from Antigua to Grenada for our first hurricane season in the Lesser Antilles. PILOTAGE If sailing from the UK, most cruisers navigate into Amsterdam using the Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Canal), which starts from IJmuiden. It is a major cargo route where commercial shipping has priority. On approach to IJmuiden, it is best to keep to the south of the main channel. You need to report to IJmuiden Traffic Control on VHF Ch 61 when 5 miles from the harbour. Strong tidal streams can run across the entrance. From the IJmuiden IJM racon buoy More (A)8s, plot a course of 100.5? on the leading lights, which will take you past the pier heads and Buitenhaven to the Zuider Buitenkanaal. DEPARTURE Check for outlook of settled, stable weather and plan to arrive in daylight. Westwards from the Lizard, Wolf Rock lighthouse (Fl.15s34m16M Horn(1)30s) is a useful passage mark. From Penzance or Newlyn leave the Runnel Stone S. Cardinal buoy to starboard and give a wide berth to the Longships rocks (Longships lighthouse (Fl(2)WR.10s35m15/11M Horn(1)10s)) 1M west of Land’s End. A N-S Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) lies between Longships and the Seven Stones reef. This notorious reef is a hazard in the NE approaches to Scilly. Land’s End at around half ebb (HW Dover – 3 hours) maximises the use of the tide. ARRIVAL St Mary’s Sound is probably the easiest entry from the east. Cornish firm Triskel Marine has won the DAME Design Award for 2018. It took the prestigious accolade for Integrel — a generator system which uses smart technology to harness the spare capacity from the inboard engine to generate electrical energy either for immediate consumption or to charge the battery banks. Described by Triskel as ‘like an alternator on steroids’, the system is programmed with information about the propeller, engine and main elements of the boat’s electrical system so it can also calculate how much additional load can be added to make the engine more efficient. Golden Globe Race skipper Jean-Luc Van Den Heede is continuing to Cape Horn after making repairs to his damaged mast at sea. The 73-year-old’s Rustler 36, Matmut pitchpoled during a Southern Ocean storm, resulting in damage to the connecting bolt attachment to the mast that holds all four lower shrouds. Originally he decided to divert 2,000 miles to the Chilean port of Valparaiso. If he had stopped he would have moved into the Chichester Class for entrants who make one stop. Like all of the race competitors, the French skipper has a jury rig if he loses his mast. Portuguese photographer Ricardo Pinto has won the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image 2018 award for his stunning picture (left) of the Volvo Ocean Race team Sun Hung Kai Scallywag arriving in Lisbon during leg one of the race. It is 70 years since an amateur boat builder, Sydney Cambridge, secured teak sleepers from the stock of the Bengal and Assam Railway to help build a 36ft gaff-cutter in Calcutta. Cambridge adapted the plans of designer Frederick Shepherd, levelling off her keel, heightening her topsides and using thicker teak planking. The result was a much heavier, hugely strong but slower hull than that originally drawn.
