Jeremy Rogers’ yard in Lymington: birthplace of the iconic Contessa designs and a veritable temple to long-keeled craft. Less well known is the yard’s interest in electric auxiliary engines, something they have been involved in for more than 10 years. Their first project, the refit of a Contessa 32 called Calypso, was an experiment to see what was possible. ‘Calypso was a test bed in the technology’s infancy,’ explains Kit Rogers. ‘Inevitably, we didn’t get it all right, but we learned a lot about the dos and don’ts of electric yachting. Making the case for a full electric conversion is, at present, a big challenge for manufacturers. The cost, for a basic set up, is roughly three times that of conventional inboard diesel propulsion. So, instead of putting their efforts into auxiliary in-boards, several manufacturers are concentrating on proving the concept by converting owners to the advantages of electric through outboard engines. THE ANCHORAGE IS A WELCOME ESCAPE FROM THE BUSY NEARBY MARINA Puerto Portals is best known as one of the marina hotspots in Mallorca, a place where the rich and famous go to escape the crowds of Palma. The large marina dominates the port and has room for several superyachts at a time. There was not much in the marina under 60 ft when I visited, apart from some local fishing boats that are accommodated as part of the permission to build the marina. Arisaig has long been one of my favourite Scottish cruising grounds, offering quiet anchorages full of romance and history. A wonderful centre for both sailors and walkers, the village lies at the head of Loch nan Ceall, the most westerly loch in the area of Morar, itself part of Lochaber. Arisaig hosts well-maintained, sheltered moorings, while the A830, known as The Road to the Isles gives good access for cars. Philippe Péché, is a veteran offshore sailor, with more than 300,000 racing miles to his name. He has twice won the Jules Verne Trophy for the fastest circumnavigation with Bruno Peyron. The Golden Globe Race was his first attempt at a solo event and was to be the last race of his offshore career. He has lived in Australia for 20 years, but is now based back in France where he has retrained as a yacht surveyor. PILOTAGE Correct identification of the starting point into Arisaig is essential; pass between the flat island of Luinga Mhor and the higher promontory of Rhu Arisaig, usefully marked with a blob of white paint. Rocks and islets extend southwest from the Rhu Arisaig, so give them a wide berth. Once satisfied with your approach, head for the grey two-storey cottage on a bearing of 080°, passing the first three perches to port. The reefs, rocks, and convolutions of the channel make the layout of the perches and the safe passage confusing. Take it slowly, not moving on until the next objective is certain and the route becomes obvious. Once the third perch has been left well to port, alter course to 010°to leave perch no.4 to starboard. She’s quite beamy, which makes her very stable, but her deck saloon is rather short compared to more modern cats and her galley, albeit large and extensively equipped, is amidships in the port hull.
