Cape Clear is extremely relaxed but island life is not without its challenges. Many of the islanders maintain a legally roadworthy car at Baltimore, and, well, an island car on Cape. Battle-scarred, with broken lights and roaring exhausts, these vehicles perforce have good brakes to deal with the precipitous road down to North Harbour. There are no policemen, and no crime, on Cape.
Seán Rua’s shop incorporates a very good restaurant, and on the floor above is Club Chléire, while Cotter’s Bar, across the road, is the other hostelry. There are frequent music sessions, and an annual Storytelling Festival. Closing time? Don’t ask.
