Merchant Adventurers
By James Evans, published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, at £9.99
This is an astonishing account of a voyage begun in 1553 with three ships searching for a Northeast Passage to ‘the mighty and rich empire of Cathay’.
The expedition’s leaders, brave soldier Sir Hugh Willoughby, and brilliant young scientist and seaman Richard Chancellor, suffered very different fates. Chancellor returned to England via the Moscow court of Ivan the Terrible, but Willoughby and his crew froze in the ice. The author, a meticulous historian, used original log books to produce a dramatic story of excitement, hardship and deprivation. Not a light read, but an enthralling one.
