Getting out of the lower reaches of Finnish football is not easy, even for clubs with a recent stellar history like Tampere United.
United are one of three clubs in Tampere, Finland’s third-biggest city, located some111miles north of the capital, Helsinki. Tampereen Ilves, the best supported of the three, play in the top flight, while Tampereen Pallo-Veikot (TPV) spent last season in the fourth tier, but both have been around since the 1930s. Tampere United were only formed in1998 but enjoyed a stellar run with forays into Europe, before crashing spectacularly.
