New Year, marked by the lunisolar calendar, is the start of the two-week celebration also known as Spring Festival. It’s an ancient Chinese holiday that’s celebrated in areas with significant Chinese populations, including my birth country of Taiwan, Mainland China (PRC), Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mauritius, the Philippines and Australia.
Over this holiday, people travel back to their home towns to spend time with their families and children receive scented red envelopes containing cash. After the family New Year meal, all the children gather and make their way through the family hierachy.
