I’ve been using a ONEWAY Wolverine Grinding Jig mounted under my 8" grinder for nearly 20 years to sharpen my bowl and spindle gouges and scrapers. Ernie Conover writes about this system on page 22, and it’s arguably the fastest, easiest way to keep lathe tools ready for action. I love mine! Trouble is, my grinder is located across the shop from the lathe, so touching up my bowl gouge a half dozen times or so on a Saturday morning might help me get my steps in for the day, but it’s a bit inconvenient. While they’re not the showiest or most complex woodworking joints, rabbets, dadoes and grooves are, nonetheless, three of the most practical and versatile joints you can make. Best suited to cabinet and furniture carcass construction using plywood, MDF and similar sheet goods, all three joints are also good for some solid-wood applications, such as building simple boxes and drawers. Cheaper Infill Option to Epoxy If you need to create a colored infill, as I did for filling the recesses of the card suit symbols in the maple block at right, I’ve discovered that fiberglass resin mixed with craft glitter is a more affordable alternative to today’s popular (and expensive!) epoxy resins for woodworking. My question is, after hollowing out the insides of each, should they be finished/sealed with poly, shellac, a food-grade oil or anything at all? I’m not sure if the oils from the wood are harmful or will react negatively with either the salt or peppercorns. A Astronium graveolens is the “other” name for jobillo. It is an oily Central American wood. I would seal the inside, if it were my project, for two reasons: stability and toxicity. Sealing will help stabilize the wood and prevent it from distorting. Conover’s Windsor Stool Here’s my version of Ernie Conover’s “Four-legged Windsor Stool” from the December 2021 issue. The seat diameter was too large to turn on my lathe, so I glued up a flat seat from contrasting pieces of board lumber, rounded it on a disk sander and routed the edges. The 1/2" tenons on the stretchers were too small (I broke one), so I made them 3/4" instead. I used my band saw to cut kerfs in the tops of the legs for wedges. I really enjoyed the project! Spalted woods … are a nightmare to a freshly sharpened edge. This is because the black zone lines in spalted wood are not really wood anymore. Instead, they are mineral-based deposits left over from the spalting process as the fungi crept through the wood, destroying cell structures in their wake. As far as the tool is concerned, cutting these zone lines is more like turning seashells. One good slice, and the edge of your favorite [turning] tool is gone. If you have friends or family who live in apartments with balconies or small patios, this little three-tiered plant stand could make a great gift to help them beautify a small outdoor living space. Its three boxes are just large enough to hold a couple of 4" pots, and the swept-back angle of its framework will ensure that the bottom and middle plants receive enough sunlight and sufficient room to grow upward. Creating pleasing, eye-catching geometry should always be one of our goals as woodworkers. And this stepped chest, which is loosely based on 19th century Japanese Tansu styles, will definitely give you that chance! The corners of its three-tiered carcass and six drawers showcase the best of what box joints have to offer: a repeating interplay of lighter face grain and darker end grain in those interlocking pins.
