The mystery tool from Barry Whiteaker of Walling, Tennessee, in our April issue, according to Al Accettola of Flemington, New Jersey, among many others, is “a rug hooking/tufting tool.”
Sam Ebersole of Perry, Oklahoma, explained: “The ‘spoon side’ has a small hole through it into which a small piece of rag is inserted. The other side is a piercing device that pokes a hole in the backing (generally burlap).” Doris E. Williams of Pullman, West Virginia, further elaborated: “The two halves of the tool are worked with both hands, alternately sliding back and forth: one half punching a hole, and the other pushing the yarn through the space created by the needle and regulating the size of the loop.”
