Wood Threads. Cutting threads in metal with a tap is pretty common. But, taps can also be used to cut threads in wood. These, shown here, are designed to be used in wood and are a hair sharper than their metal brethren. After drilling a pilot hole, the tap is screwed into the hole, cutting the threads. To help harden the threads, I like to saturate the threads with thin CA glue. In addition, you can cut male threads on dowels using a tap box, like you see below.
