I start this week’s letter with a bit of news from me. After a year in the chair as editor of WHO, my contract has come to an end and so this issue will be my last. Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is under fire for what’s been called a culturally “insensitive” and “damaging” children’s book, Billy and the Epic Escape, which has resulted in it being pulled from sale. The fantasy novel for primary school-aged kids features a young First Nations girl who is living in foster care in an Indigenous community near Alice Springs. In the book, she’s abducted by the novel’s villain. It’s a storyline that’s triggered an outpouring of condemnation from Indigenous groups and people.
