In 2015 Stephen Smith was found on a dark road with a gash in his head; his death was ruled a hit-and-run. But South Carolina Highway Patrol spent months investigating it as a possible murder. In interviews with Smith’s family and friends, the Murdaugh name was brought up, but no-one was named a person of interest. SLED is now taking another look at Smith’s case. On September 15 it opened an investigation into the 2018 death of Alex’s housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, 57, after a “trip-and-fall” accident in his home.
