George Russell may be the man of the moment as Mercedes’ next hero in silver, but he’s far from an overnight success.
The precocious talent began karting aged eight, and won various British titles and the European Karting Championship. But, the victories continued in cars – he lifted the 2014 BRDC F4 title, and McLaren Autosport BRDC Award (beating a certain Alex Albon, who was one of the finalists).
His big break came, though when, aged 15, he sent an email to one of the most powerful men in world motorsport, Mercedes’ Toto Wolff, for a shot at joining the brand’s junior program.
“He came to my office, all alone in a black suit, with a PowerPoint presentation,” recalls Wolff, who put him on the program from 2017.
