HAVING STRUCK GOLD with a hybrid-powered family car recipe, in the Prius, as well as seeing big success with hybrid versions of the RAV4 family SUV, it was only logical that Toyota should apply the same thinking to a small SUV. And, in 2022, just that happened, with the release of the Yaris Cross.
Meanwhile, despite the all-electric Leaf family car cementing Nissan as a leader in electrification, that brand was caught napping by its Japanese compatriots; its own small SUV, the distinctive Juke, didn’t get hybrid power for another six months.
Today, having been on sale for a few years, both cars make tempting used buys. They’re closely matched for performance and practicality, but how do they compare in terms of efficiency, build quality and reliability?
