It’s a great choice, particularly when it comes to satisfying the tax-busting needs of company car drivers. However, while that group accounts for the vast majority of C-Class saloons on UK roads, the C-Class Estate has always been anything but the exclusive preserve of the corporate car park. And we reckon there’s still a place for diesels like the C220d Estate among private buyers. For one thing, it’s much cheaper to buy. The latest model to follow Peugeot’s ‘e-number’ naming format is this new e-3008 family SUV, which follows on from the e-208 and e-308 hatchbacks and the e-2008 small SUV and has a headline-grabbing official range of up to 435 miles. Although real-world range usually falls short of official figures, this still represents a big step forward, not just for battery-powered Peugeots but for mainstream electric SUVs in general. However, its first fully electric car, the Bentley Blower Jnr, probably isn’t what anyone was expecting. Developed in collaboration with The Little Car Company (a Bicester-based manufacturer that specialises in producing small yet driveable versions of some of the most famous models in history), it’s inspired by the 1929 Blower endurance racer. Unlike previous Little Car Company projects, however, the Blower Jnr is road legal – despite being 85% scale and swapping the original car’s supercharged 4.5-litre petrol engine for a modest 15kW (20bhp) electric motor. After years of producing cars that were quietly competent if all but invisible in a crowd, here was a funky-looking family SUV that really stood out. It was as interesting inside as it was functional, too, and its frugal engines didn’t get in the way of driving fun. It’s hardly surprising, then, that it proved popular. And, likewise, that popularity means it’s no shock that Toyota has stuck with a similar formula for this replacement. What’s more, you can now have it as either a regular e:HEV hybrid (our focus here) or an e:PHEV plug-in hybrid. Both versions use a 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine; the only difference is that the e:HEV gets four-wheel drive (whereas the e:PHEV is two-wheel drive) and a much smaller battery. Speaking at the recent Munich motor show, Seat chairman Thomas Schafer admitted that the Spanish brand’s role as a mainstream car maker will be taken by Cupra.
