In the same vein, the new Ioniq 6 is intended to emphasise style to tempt buyers into going electric. Not that its sleek lines are purely for show. You see, the Ioniq 6 has been designed to slip through the air as efficiently as possible, with this helping the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version to an official range of up to 382 miles. SHARING IS CARING in the car world, but while you’ve already read about the upcoming electric Porsche Macan, which is being developed alongside the Audi Q6 e-tron, there’s still lots to separate these two electric SUVs. Chief among the differences is how they’ll look, because while the electric Macan will get sporty styling to underline its high-performance credentials, the Q6 e-tron is rather more restrained. FORD RECENTLY MADE headlines by announcing that it was killing off its Fiesta hatchback, leaving thousands of UK car buyers wondering what on earth they should go for next. But fortunately, not every manufacturer is deserting the market for small, cheap hatchbacks, and Suzuki is hoping that its Swift can fill the void. In order to keep prices down, the next-generation Swift will come with the same 1.2-litre mild hybrid petrol engine as the current model. Unless, that is, you go for the Swift Sport, in which case you’ll get a turbocharged 1.4 – again carried over. And this theme continues elsewhere, with the Swift’s underpinnings updated instead of all-new. EXECUTIVE ESTATE CARS aren’t necessarily all about carrying vast amounts of luggage, but they offer flexibility when it’s needed. The BMW 3 Series Touring is a case in point: it provides the same sporty driving experience as its saloon sibling, but your dog can ride along in the boot. The 3 Series has just come back from a facelift, as its gently tweaked lights and front grille attest. There haven’t been any mechanical changes, though, and while this isn’t a problem for the petrol or diesel engines, the 330e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) we’re testing has fallen behind the times. THE HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 was already a strong electric car, but it’s been spending time at the gym – bulking up its battery size and paying attention to its rather flabby suspension. So, while the model started out with a smaller battery than the closely related Kia EV6 (73kWh in higher-spec versions, versus 77.4kWh) and fell short on range, it now gets one with the same capacity as its rival. That pushes up the official range of the rear-wheel-drive Ioniq 5 in Premium trim to a much more competitive 315 miles (against the equivalent EV6’s 328 miles and the Genesis GV60’s 321 miles). LOOK UP THE phrase ‘fashionably late’ in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of the Toyota bZ4X. We jest, but Toyota, while being late to the electric SUV party, has timed the launch of the bZ4X perfectly. The demand for SUVs like this is sky-high, and there are long waiting lists for some rivals, including the Audi Q4 e-tron, Genesis GV60 and Kia EV6. Its closest rival, however, is the Subaru Solterra, which is the same as the bZ4X under the skin, having been jointly developed with Toyota. TECH GIANT APPLE wouldn’t be anywhere near as big as it is today if it hadn’t expanded into smartphones, and Lotus is hoping that its own entry into a booming market will give its fortunes a similar boost. You see, the fully electric Eletre is the brand’s first ever SUV. The entry-level version (simply called the Eletre) is set to cost £89,500, placing it in line with Porsche’s Taycan CrossTurismo 4S. LIFE AS A car designer must be quite repetitive these days. Most new cars are simply replacements for earlier models, and with a host of established rivals to compete with, it’s almost inevitable that new models will look a certain way. In other words, creative freedom can be in short supply. And this is why, when Peugeot’s design team first got wind of top-secret plans for the all-new Peugeot 408, every single employee was desperate to work on it – leading to quite a few arguments and disagreements between them in Paris, we’re told. IN PETROL GUISE, the Genesis G80 successfully undercuts its big-selling luxury rivals on price, but its sole engine option struggles to compete when it comes to performance, fuel economy and CO2 output. This electric version could be the remedy to all of those shortcomings. In place of the regular model’s engine, the Electrified G80 has a pair of electric motors – one for the front wheels, the other for the back ones to make it four-wheel drive – that produce a total of 364bhp. WHEN IS AN E-tron not an E-tron? When it’s an e-tron, of course. You see, Audi’s nomenclature demands that any fully electric car must have ‘e-tron’ appended to its name, but when the brand launched its first EV (electric vehicle) in the form of a large SUV, it named it simply E-tron. Over time, as the brand added more electric models, that’s led to the potential to befuddle buyers; it wasn’t immediately obvious where the E-tron fitted into the brand’s line-up. Thankfully, Audi has brought clarity by renaming it Q8 e-tron. That means it slots in more neatly above the Q4 e-tron and below the flagship E-tron GT, and it aligns with the combustion-engined Q8. THE PICK-UP TRUCK market has brought us some interesting wannabe-luxury options in recent years, but sporty ones are rare. The Ford Ranger Raptor is an exception to that rule. Like the original version it replaces, this new Raptor still doesn’t qualify as a light commercial vehicle. A capacity of only 652kg in its load bed means the Raptor isn’t all that practical and remains a private buyer’s plaything. There’s just one engine option at launch: a new 288bhp 3.0-litre petrol V6. A fuel economy figure of just 20.4mpg might tempt you to wait for the return of a 2.0-litre diesel (as in the old car) next summer. LOOK FOR DAMAGE Give your tyres a visual check once a week to ensure that there are no cuts or bulges in the sidewalls and that they aren’t wearing out unevenly. CHECK THE PRESSURES REGULARLY Use a properly calibrated tyre pressure gauge to ensure that your car’s tyres are at their recommended levels. It pays to do this once a month when the tyres are cold. THE LAUNCH OF a new Honda Civic is always big news for the family car class, but the minds of hot hatch enthusiasts might well be focused on a single, overwhelming thought: the possibility that there’s a new Civic Type R just around the corner. It was no exception with this 11th-generation Civic, which went on sale in 2022, and fans of the Type R will be pleased that its formula hasn’t been messed with. It uses an updated version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol unit from the outgoing car, with the power output up from 316bhp to 325bhp. AFTER YEARS OF elevating the performance and opulence of standard BMWs to another level, the small family firm of Alpina is now officially part of the huge German brand. And the first Alpina model to have its name officially prefixed with ‘BMW’ is here: the B4 Gran Coupé. In true Alpina fashion, subtle visual tweaks to what started out as a standard M440i conceal fettled suspension and an uprated version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine. WHILE WE SHARE many similarities with our friends across the Atlantic, there’s an equally long list of American staples that just don’t translate. A prime example is the Chevrolet Corvette sports car, but that could be about to change with the new C8 generation.
