A significant year in travel
Two hundred years ago this month, one of the most practical yet inspiring forms of travel was born in an unexpected place. On 27 September 1825, the Stockton & Darlington Railway was opened in the industrial heart of north-east England, as steam power was used to carry passengers on a public line for the first time anywhere. That single journey, travelling 42km from Shildon to Stockton, sparked a global railway revolution, reshaping societies, economies and, eventually, the way that we see the world.
