For Dries Van Noten, 2024 has been a year to remember. In March, the Belgian designer announced his imminent retirement from fashion. Having risen to prominence during the 1980s as part of the Antwerp Six (a collective of graduates from the city’s Royal Academy, including Walter Van Beirendonck and Ann Demeulemeester), almost four decades on, he took his final bow on a runway, shimmering with silver leaf, during June’s menswear shows in Paris. ‘I want to shift my focus to all the things I never had time for,’ he said at the time. ‘I’m sad, but at the same time, happy.’ One of Van Noten’s greatest pleasures is his 55-acre garden, in the grounds of the Palladian-style home he shares with his partner in Lier, near Antwerp. A vintage photo of Jilly Cooper sitting in a book-lined study, surrounded by floral wallpaper and dogs could not be a more timely portrait of the legendary British author. Her 1988 bonkbuster Rivals hit the streamers this autumn to rapturous reviews around the world, and the chintzy surroundings in the image could be straight out of Rutshire, the racy, rural idyll fictionalised in her chronicles. The image was one of many taken of celebrities ‘at home’ that formed part of a ‘Very Sanderson’ ad campaign in the 1970s. Other ‘models’ included Diana Rigg and Britt Ekland, and these maximalist domestic settings, decked out in Sanderson’s floral fabrics and botanical wallpapers, were seen as the height of elegance and good taste. Once touted as a novel material offering unprecedented malleability and versatility, plastic is steadily becoming one of the biggest threats to our natural environment. But it can be hard not to marvel at it when walking around a new exhibition currently on at Hyundai Motorstudio Busan in Korea’s second largest city. ‘Plastic: Remaking Our World’ looks at the past, present and future of this practical but problematic material, and explores how the Korean car manufacturer is addressing the issues surrounding its production and use. For Victoire de Castellane, creative director of Dior Joaillerie, jewellery design is a celebration of bold patterns and whimsical designs. In the decades since establishing Dior Joaillerie in 1999, de Castellane has rethought the often-serious parameters of high jewellery in an embrace of non-precious stones and a brilliant rainbow of colours for pieces that reference surreal and fantastical forms. This spirit of nonconformity continues through to the sculptural lines of her fine jewellery, which also jointly considers the influence of Dior’s heritage alongside contemporary references. The spirit of generosity What we put on our table, and who we place around it, defines us as individuals. Cascading down a steep slope above the shores of Lake Panguipulli, in Los Ríos in Chile, Casa Pyr is a new project from the Santiago-based Cazú Zegers Arquitectura. The house was commissioned by an artist and her husband, who returned to Chile after living abroad, choosing a tricky site in an area where they had holidayed in the past to build their new house. On paper, the plot was perfect, but as architect Cazú Zegers explains, the process was long and deeply involved, not least because the pandemic interrupted it. ‘The site was amazing, but it was bad for architecture,’ she says, explaining how the south-facing aspect overlooking the lake was countered by a north side shielded by a tall cliff face. Flight of fancy Dunhill’s brass paperweight elevates the desktop landscape In the near-totally digital world that we inhabit, flicking through a stack of papers can seem surprisingly satisfying. Which is why, despite recalling a somewhat bygone era, a paperweight remains a covetable desktop companion, a small luxury that doubles as a suitable gift for the person in your life who has just about everything else. For the late French collector and antique art dealer, Yves Gastou, men’s rings held a particular power. Rife with symbolism, Gastou appreciated both their artistry and their aestheticism, amassing an impressive collection of more than 1,000 rings in his lifetime. Now, these pieces are the subject of an exhibition, ‘Men’s Rings, Yves Gastou Collection’, which marks the first time that the collection will visit the Middle East.
