The tiny island of Filicudi, off Sicily’s northern coast, has long attracted creatives, with the likes of Massimiliano Fuksas, Ettore Sottsass and Maurizio Cattelan enjoying its idyllic location. In Maranhão, in north-eastern Brazil, daily life is strongly linked to the region’s dominant plant, the babassu palm, whose coconut-like fruit produces oil that is invaluable to the medical, beauty and food industries. The fruit is harvested by a local, predominantly female group whose community is persistently under threat from landowners who either hinder access or cut down palm trees to make pasture. The Reference Center of Babassu Harvesters, by São Paulo-based practice Estudio Flume, has been designed to help this very community. Built using simple earth blocks, the centre’s role is to provide a physical hub, a space for the women to gather and work. Not only is Victoria Peak the highest point in Hong Kong, but it has also long epitomised luxury on the island. The location of architect Antony Chan’s newest project, it is close to the city (the Peak Tram delivers passengers from Central in just eight minutes) yet offers rare verdant views. Chan’s Hong Kong-based interior architecture studio Cream capitalised on this contrast when it transformed the interior of an existing 2014, four-storey detached house within a covetable private residential enclave using a fresh vision of contemporary living embracing textured finishes and objets d’art. This month, to celebrate the launch of its Plein Soleil collection, Celine opens an ephemeral pop-up space in London’s Harrods. Channelling the ease and levity of summers spent on the French Riviera, home to creative director Hedi Slimane since 2018, the wood-beamed space – complete with Celine-branded jacquard hammock in the Knightsbridge store’s window – is designed to reflect the ‘sophisticated nonchalance’ of the Parisian house’s S/S23 collection. In the 1970s, the Loro Piana family, who began trading wool from Trivero, Italy, at the start of the 19th century, travelled to the wild highland plains of Mongolia in search of the world’s finest cashmere, the fibre with which the house has now become synonymous. The house’s new ‘Bale’ bag recalls these roots, its name a reference to the enormous cashmere bales harvested by nomadic Mongolian shepherds and delivered to the company’s spinning mill in Roccapietra, Piedmont. Tanya Aguiñiga knows a thing or two about living in flux. From the age of four, each morning at 3.30am, she travelled across the US-Mexico border from her home in Tijuana to her school in San Diego. ‘It’s crazy, logistically. But it’s also crazy, psychologically and emotionally,’ she tells me via Zoom from her LA studio. ‘At the time, kind of similar to now, there were massive amounts of migrants at the border up against the fence trying to get to the US side. We had to navigate pretty difficult experiences on our way. Saint Laurent recently launched its first fine jewellery collection, with creative director Anthony Vaccarello looking to the house’s heritage, interweaving couture references into a series of 18kt gold pieces defined by bold silhouettes. Oversized cable-chain bracelets with graduated links make a chunky foil for elegant loop bangles, while slender pendant necklaces and long threader earrings imbue precious materials with a flirty fluidity.
