Six years ago, Andrea Canè, creative brand director of Woolrich, sat down for dinner with British performance-wear designer-turned-farmer Jeff Griffin. ‘“I need a tractor.” That was the first thing he said to me,’ says Canè. ‘BOBOLI’ CONSOLE by Rodolfo Dordoni A characteristically geometric design from Rodolfo Dordoni, this console is part of a series of new additions to the ‘Boboli’ family of products that includes side and coffee tables. The slick, burnished aluminium legs spiral upwards, like vertically trained plants in a classical Italian garden. Topped with a slick marble slab, the console is architectural in construction and altar-like in stature. ‘CENTRAL’ MIRROR by Francesco Forcellini Milan-based industrial designer Francesco Forcellini has created a striking mirror that misaligns perspective to intriguing effect. The focal point, a circular disk, draws inspiration from the sun and reflects objects head on. ‘TOTEM’ BOOKSHELF by Bjarke Ingels Group Firmly a household name when it comes to his building projects, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has recently completed a furniture design for Italian manufacturer Driade – a bookshelf that’s stacked with visual trickery thanks to some clever construction details. The piece is made up of eight volumes, each supported by an X-shaped frame that creates the overall structure. At first glance, it’s hard to tell where the shelves end and start, as each has been fused together in the middle at a 45-degree angle. Desert bloom SONOP, NAMIBIA A year after the opening of Omaanda, a private lodge near the Namibian capital Windhoek, Belgian group Zannier Hotels has launched Sonop Namibia, a luxury tented camp on the southern edge of the Namib Desert. Featuring a nuanced mixture of antiques, modern amenities and earthy interiors, the ten tents serve as richly appointed launchpads from which to explore the surrounding desert dunes and rock formations. Copper bathtubs and four-poster beds nod to the refined, 1920s British explorer aesthetic, as do details such as flasks, binoculars and vintage maps. Thomas Demand likes cars. And he really likes car designers. The German artist has an acute appreciation of the unique challenges they face and the role they play in shaping the future of our society. ‘If you are a car designer, you have to predict the future,’ explains Demand, who has been living in LA for the last nine years, a city built around auto-dependency. ‘This is an amazing task when you realise they are designing at least three years ahead of any official launch; then that car has to be around and relevant for at least another ten years. Raking the shorelines for culinary ingredients and cosmetic remedies has long been a popular pursuit, and now the design world is getting in on the act. More nostalgic in nature, design’s focus is on the maritime treasures such as shells and pebbles that make up childhood collections. From the elaborate radiatori and campanelle to the minimal pici and fazzoletti, pasta shapes issue from every corner of italy, and you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s little room left for invention. however, it’s a challenge that has been embraced this year by a curious collective, which launched a new short-form pasta, alma, during Milan Design week. Product designer Chiara Andreatti (w*225) and photographer Alice Schillaci, of Casalinghe di Tokyo (a product brand Schillaci conceived to celebrate the beauty of the everyday object), joined forces to come up with the look, while the manufacture has been a combined effort by two top pasta factories, Trafile Turconi and Baradello. The most impressive architectural projects don’t always consist of a single structure. This new chapel in Minho, Portugal, by Nicholas Burns, is part of an ongoing transformation of a sprawling private estate into a bespoke, architecturally coherent environment. Burns has spent the past three years working on this 30-hectare site, and the chapel, featuring a sweeping concrete roof, is the latest element. Burns’ trajectory is unconventional. He didn’t finish his architectural studies, but took the advice of University of Sydney professor Michael Tawa and decided to teach himself. ‘I’ve focused on philosophy and practical learning,’ he says, ‘and I’m still learning about tension, the fine balancing of polar opposites. The affluent Belgian seaside resort of Knokke-Heist, in west Flanders, has a bright new landmark. A collaboration between Ghent-based architecture studio Compagnie-O and dutch artist John körmeling, the project was conceived as a structure to encompass several functions relating to health and safety on the beach, and was required to house a first aid room, a lifeguard station with lifeboats, a police station, and public toilets. They responded with a design in bright yellow, referencing ‘plastic beach toys and buoys’ and the sun, while at the same time using a colour that is internationally associated with lifeguards. ‘despite the romantic metaphor, we’re looking at a straightforward lifeguard and police station, fully equipped to manage pain, save lives and guard overall security,’ say the architects. the cylindrical ‘object’ also features an…

Walking into Atelier MVM feels like going down the rabbit hole: the gem-like space contains a potpourri of objects, themselves rendered in shapes and configurations with a decidedly baroque sensibility. In one corner, a pink onyx table seems to have erupted out of a spray of pastel corals and shells; at the other end of the small room, a towering 1950s plaster-and-wood floor lamp in the shape of a giant mushroom stands against a 1980s Portuguese tapestry of flora and fauna suggesting Jeff Koons in needlepoint. ‘CE’ BAR CART by Gisela Simas Traditional English tea trolleys of times gone by informed Gisela Simas’ modernist take on a drinks cart, designed for Espasso. The brand deals exclusively with midcentury and contemporary Brazilian design so it felt like a natural fit to work with Simas who, although based in London, is a Brazilian native. She opted to use freijo, a wood originating from the American Tropics, for the cart and each section has been crafted by hand – from its tambour door that conceals shelves on its inside to a set of simple circular wheels that give the piece a modern feel. Ancient and modern SUCEDE, VALENCIA Miguel Ángel Mayor, the strapping head chef at Sucede, finally has a restaurant space that is as slick and streamlined as his cooking. This is not to say that interior designer Francesc Rifé has completely erased all traces of the previous iteration (which, incidentally, he also designed, in 2010). Barcelona-based Rifé has left intact the imposing ruins of the 12th-century watchtowers and walls that once wrapped around Valencia, allowing the exposed brickwork to serve as monumental room dividers. Over this ancient patina, he has layered black-stained oak slats, and 500-year-old Valencian ceramics. ‘GESSATI45’ WASHBASIN by Gumdesign A top-mounted sink with a decorative design based on pinstriped suits has to be a first, surely? Breaking new ground in basin aesthetics is Tuscan studio Gumdesign; in its first collaboration with Italian brand Antoniolupi, it has created the ‘Gessati45’ basin, which begins life as a series of narrow Carrara marble sheets that are glued together with coloured resin. These are then carved and sanded to create the sink’s form, in either a round, oval or square shape. The striking result reflects the backgrounds of Gumdesign founders’ Laura Fiaschi and Gabriele Pardi, who trained in graphic design and architecture respectively.
