Two years ago New York-based Danish designer Søren Rose bought a 1974 Overlander Airstream and began customising it. Now, solar panels on the roof take care of the power needs, while the interior includes Dinesen timber flooring, Kvadrat fabrics, Vola taps, Bisazza tiles and Roblon LED lights. Flexibility is key, so the dining area turns into a queensize bed. When Mike and Penny Winton commissioned Frank Gehry to design a guest house for their Lake Minnetonka estate in the 1980s, they never dreamed it would lead such a transient life. Gehry’s seminal work has already moved once when it was donated to Minnesota’s University of St Thomas in 2007. Now it must move again. The house, composed of six geometric forms, will go up for auction in May at Wright’s. One day during the Bordeaux grape harvest five years ago, Lord Norman Foster showed up for lunch at Château Margaux. Mutual friends had introduced one of the world’s greatest architects to one of the world’s finest winemakers, and this autumnal meal in its rustic setting would end up influencing the future of the winery. Undiscovered rug designs by George Nakashima are set to cast his signature aesthetic in a whole new light. Created over 50 years ago and uncovered by his daughter Mira, who chanced upon a folder of sketches simply labelled ‘Rugs’, the unrealised designs have been brought to life by US carpet maker Edward Fields to celebrate its 80th anniversary. The seven-piece collection articulates Nakashima’s love of nature, and sees landscapes, skies and migrating bird formations serve as reference points. The end of General Franco’s 36-year dictatorship and nationalist censorship in 1975 opened the doors to a new era of individual liberties across Spain. Culturally, the country had a lot of catching up to do, and the years to come would bring an influx of immigration and social change, championing a new attitude to life. It was during this time that Mallorcan entrepreneur Lorenzo Fluxà took it upon himself to distil a century’s worth of family shoemaking know-how into an idiosyncratic footwear brand that has kept design and diversity at its core. Back in October 2014, Veuve Clicquot and Wallpaper* announced their collaborative Re-Creation Awards with the rousing words of the 19th-century champagne house founder Barbe-Nicole Clicquot: ‘Invent the things of tomorrow. Go before others, be determined and exacting.’ With these words as inspiration, competition entrants from across the globe were asked to submit their designs for the 2015 Clicquot Mailbox, a classic US mailbox resized to make it the perfect fit for a 75cl champagne bottle. The resulting creations, which came in myriad graphic shapes and colours, were examined by judges including Wallpaper* creative director Sarah Douglas, sculptor Pablo Reinoso, designer Ferruccio Laviani and Veuve Clicquot CEO Jean-Marc Gallot. Before 1840, as London’s clocks struck 12.00, Exeter’s clocks read 11.46 and Bristol’s clocks 11.50. It wreaked havoc on train timetables to use the sun as timekeeper, so railway companies intervened. Over the next few years, city clocks were wound to London time – or ‘railway time’ as it was called. For many, this attack on the natural order of things was a step too far: it was ‘as if the sun itself had given in’, complained Charles Dickens, in a great rant about the disruption of the railway project in Dombey and Son.
