’66 Split Single Cab, Ashley North Ashley North’s Split Single Cab is fresh out of major restoration. The truck was imported from Austria and prior to restoration, with the greatest of respect, it did look something of a wreck. Ashley had a friend complete all the work, which involved a number of modifications. These included lowered suspension, with a narrowed adjustable beam and a rear straight axle conversion. The front wheel arches have also been tubbed and the steering box raised. The engine is a stock 1600cc twin port with a progressive Weber carburettor. “One of the problems we had with the tubbed front wheel arches, was finding an optimum driving position,” explains Ashley. “We overcame this by making up a new bench seat using a plywood frame, then a…

Held every other year, EBi has become a must-do show for me. And, if the hoards of UK visitors are anything to go by, a great many of you, too. For me, a European show like this is the perfect antidote to the now oh-so-familiar UK shows. Don’t get me wrong, I love our show scene, but when you’ve been going to the same venues and seeing the same cars, vendors and faces for 20 years, it all gets a bit samey, doesn’t it? I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, there’s something about the vibe of a European show. When we first clapped eyes on this Van at The VolksWorld Show we thought. “Hello, that’s a bit different. Someone has applied the patina shtick to a T5.” And it works, doesn’t it? What would any self-respecting person with access to a bunch of outbuildings at the bottom of their garden that used to house 50,000 chickens do? Wow, did we ever have a blast! What a truly fantastic VW show! Taking place on Saturday, June 10, our destination was the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach, California, where the team behind the Orange County Transport Organization (O.C.T.O) held their annual summer Bus meeting. The event is something of the Holy Grail for Split Screen Bus owners, and when we arrived early in the morning, a long line of Buses had already formed at the entrance portal to the stadium. Visitors come from all over California and the neighbouring counties, and there’s every type of pre-’67 Bus here, from fully restored Barndoor Sambas to patina Single Cabs. A hard pedal when braking or pulling to one side is a sure sign that something is amiss up front. If your Bus has front disc brakes fitted this can be a sign that one or more pistons in the brake calipers has seized. This can also be a problem at MoT time, causing brake binding or imbalance, both of which are MoT failure points and dangerous to boot. If you know there’s a problem; why wait? Paul Irving has been a panel beater and body man since he was 16 and has been into VWs for about 12 years. He built his first Bus in a lean-to and it began winning awards. The friends he met through the VW scene encouraged him to open his own restoration shop and the rest, as they say, is history.
