Feature Buses are funny things. They come to the magazine in a variety of ways and what one reader loves another will loathe. We all have our reasons for falling in love with old Volkswagens. Some of us can remember them, and some of us are still wondering what it was we did wrong in a previous life to have inflicted such an existence on ourselves. For Andy Wallace, it’s as straightforward as they come. He wanted something to camp in at music festivals. With all the crazy weather we have been having recently, it makes sense to offer some tips on protecting your VW from the elements. So, this month we are going to look at injecting cavity wax into a Bay Window. Why is cavity wax protection so important? You might be surprised to know that rust often starts eating away at your sheet metal from the inside out. This is due to several factors, but it’s generally because condensation has become trapped behind the various layers of sheet metal that form your VW. Although VWs were dipped during the painting process at the factory, the cavities aren’t as well protected with paint as the exterior panels. GHETTO GRIP Guten morgen all and frohes neues jahr. Since the letters page is no more (the Summer 2016 was the last one you ran) I hope this will be passed on to Herr Klapp, as a thank you once again for the wonderful information in the February issue. I think that it came about as a result of the Bus features included in the same issue, and I can’t help but wonder if some people have watched far too many episodes of Overhaulin’, Fast ’n’ Loud, West Coast Customs, or perhaps too many repeats of Escape from New York? Herr Klapp used the terminology “slammed”, which is an urban slang, but I call such vehicles “ghetto” because they look like stripped out cars you’d find in the ghetto. I read perhaps 30%…

The moment I spotted this gleaming golden nugget I knew it needed to be featured. It was a chance encounter in the car park at Just Kampers, where Pete Roberts had popped in to buy some parts. After a quick chat [there’s no such thing with Ivan -ED] and a nose around his Bus, I asked if we could arrange to shoot his Camper and the wheels were set in motion. Okay, I’ll hold my hands up, I’d never heard of Bidford on Avon, never mind had reason to visit, until the lure of the RSVP BBQ proved too strong to resist. The RSVP, to the uninitiated is a Midlands-based VW club with a penchant for very low, preferably early and most definitely very patina’d air-cooled Volkswagens.
