The story of how this rare, right-hand drive ’54 Bus came into Mark’s hands is a convoluted one. Whilst living in Singapore a few years back, Mark found himself a Notchback for sale in Australia. In the process of buying that, he happened upon Alan Agyik at Das Resto Haus in Southport, Queensland, who agreed to build the car for him. Dan Lambert’s superb Beetle van in this issue, and Mark Walker’s piece on the UVA Shogan, caused some spirited debate around the editorial office this month. Who was the mystery person that commissioned Dan’s van before he got hold of it, we wondered? Given what it cost, and the lengths the company went to building it, it was obviously more than just one of those great ideas hatched down the local after a few jars. SHOW REPORT - SO-CAL VW WEEK EMPI Open House No less than 10 Volkswagen events took place around Los Angeles over three consecutive weekends in June. It was mayhem! But good mayhem. LAURIE MANIFOLD TRIBUTE Laurie Manifold, that hugely successful exponent of VW Beetle Autocross racing for almost three decades, sadly passed away on 3 March 2022 at the grand old age of 94. Not only was Laurie a formidable opponent on Autocross tracks around the country, he was also noted for his investigative journalism at The People national newspaper. He was the man behind hundreds of exclusives for The People, covering a huge range of subjects, and was a stickler for accuracy and doing the job right. To learn a little more about Laurie’s racing career, who better to approach than the man who knew him better than anyone else in that field, his mechanic, Roy Wilson. A photo of the car actually appeared in Issue 3 of VolksWorld where it was parked next to Brett Hawksbee’s car but, while it was a good looking car in the day, wfollowing a 25-year period of neglect while parked in my mother’s garage, it was in dire need of attention. ’68 CUSTOM NOTCHBACK I once tried to explain human nature to my girlfriend’s friends, on the eve of me flying to Sweden to stay at someone’s house I didn’t know, but who had helped me buy a Beetle from an old man locally and put it in his garage so we could service it together before I made the long drive home. The European Bug-In at Chimay in Belgium has become one of the key meetings on the European VW circuit, and deliberately echoes the vibe of the original Bug-In events, held in the USA from 1968 through to 1983. To quote the organisers, “The programme of the European Bug-In is a contemporary copy of the original Bug-ins from back in the old days, so it consists of a series of activities that await participants from all over Europe.” Those include drag racing, a slalom event, show ’n’ shine, swapmeet, burnouts, Miss Bug-In, an off-road course, trade stalls and the obligatory event merchandise.
