Alex is no stranger to modified Bay Windows but this, his latest creation, is a very different beast to his previous ones. Starting with a decent Bay Window body, Alex had Andy Robinson Race Cars create the full tube chassis, which features double wishbone suspension all round. The truck now runs a four-speed, sequential, Mendeola gearbox and an air-cooled, 2931cc Pauter Big Block motor. Dear VolksWorld, I really enjoyed the vintage-themed October issue and was interested to read the article about the savings scheme for the KdF Wagen, which mentions the cornerstone ceremony for the Volkswagenwerk factory that took place in May1938. A few years ago I picked up a brass matchbox cover at a show inscribed Grundsteinlegung des Volkswagenwerkes Mai 1938 and I wondered if this might be related to the cornerstone ceremony? Every now and then, a Beetle comes along and inexplicably steals your heart. There’s no rhyme or reason for it. It could be a £100k chequebook restoration or a £1,000 junker heading for the great crushing machine in the sky. Sometimes it just has the look that simply says, ‘love me’. The car was my first introduction to what the Swedes were getting up to with their VWs and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one knocked sideaways by it. “gauge popularity for future Cal Look Register meets” The first semi-official UK Cal Look Register meet took place earlier this year at Rivo’s Automotive Hub in Poole, Dorset (see p35). While the online community has boomed since we launched the Register on Facebook, I’d wanted to organise a real-world gathering from the beginning. For many years, I have watched the prices of Japanese tin VW models of the 1950s and ’60s rise, and the products of the Bandai factory are no exception. Consequently, this VW Bus is not only desirable to VW model collectors, but also to collectors of Japanese tin cars in general, making it quite an expensive proposition today.
