Lowered, slammed, stanced or whatever you want to call it, drastically reducing the ride height of your VW inevitably leads to parts of its underside taking a battering, be it from speed bumps, raised iron works or unlucky pheasants. Deformed front valances, heat exchangers, exhausts and engine support bars are commonplace on slammed Buses, and the latter was certainly the case on our 1970 Bay Window. It’s not even that low, compared to many around, yet it was still making regular contact with undesirables.
Initially, I thought it was the exhaust, or perhaps the rear overriders, hitting the floor, before realising it was the bottom seam on the engine support bar, or ‘moustache bar’ as it’s often called. Damage was minimal, so I continued to ignore it for a while…
