I know values have gone through the roof recently, but I honestly thought £10,000 might be enough to get a pretty good Type 2. 1967 was an important year in Volkswagen history. The first generation of the VW Bus entered its last year of production and received some last minute changes, like 12V electrics, dual-circuit brakes and a standard sliding door. The Beetle was in a similar situation, as the new model year, which traditionally started in August, heralded the most dramatic changes style-wise in the car’s life. Big bumpers, upright headlights and tombstone tail lights should give the good ’ol Beetle a more modern look. Held over the weekend of 24-26 June, ‘Lavenham’ is unlike any other VW show in the UK as it caters exclusively run ostensibly unmodified, VW and VW-based vehicles built up to August 1967. So no drastic lowering of suspension and no alloy wheels, though period accessories are allowed. There is an element of the history of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia that is not widely publicized, and that is just how important Brazil was for the model. You may be surprised to hear the Beetle-based Type 14 Karmann Ghia was not only manufactured by Karmann at Osnabrück in Germany, but also in Brazil. But where the European Karmann Ghia was a joint effort by coachbuilder, Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, and design house, Carrozzeria Ghia SpA, of Turin, Italy, the company that built the Type 1 Ghia in Brazil was actually called Karmann Ghia. Bromley. Not exactly the most thrilling place on earth is it? Throw the word pageant after it and it sounds positively turgid. However, this one-day classic car show has been on our hit list for a number of years and, when it came back under the umbrella of our new owners, we thought the time was right to pay a visit. The Pageant is an all-types classic car show where the entrants are arranged into classes, so think row upon row of MGs, Triumphs and, thankfully, air-cooled VWs, of which there were a goodly number. Just Kampers held its ninth annual Open Day on 11 June, with an impressive 2,000 visitors descending on its Odiham HQ to enjoy a relaxed weekend of rural camping, bargain prices and mellow entertainment. As always, raising money for charity was a big part of the JK event and this year it managed to amass a worthwhile £8,196.84 for Cancer Research UK. This money was raised through the generous donations of people on the day, as well as many of the local businesses and traders who were in attendance.
