“I love the idea of large-scale prints,” says John Derian, whose self-titled, New York–based home-goods stores have long been beloved mainstays in the design world, and who is wading into new waters with a collection of fabrics and wallpapers made in collaboration with Designers Guild. “Designers Guild is one of my oldest clients—I’ve been working with them since the nineties!” Derian says. “They’re not afraid of using a lot of color and pattern.” The prints source the imagery and symbols that have become central to the Derian brand over the years, from an 1800s painted rose reimagined for a chintz (shown on the love seat, left) to renderings of ferns, swallows, and seashells, as well as the color palettes used for his decoupage object series. Shortly after their spring 2016 show, Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez headed west, first to Texas, then to New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona, where they drove with a trunk full of camping gear and an itinerary heavy on land art. “We’re always looking outside of fashion to bring different ideas into what we do,” McCollough says of Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels and Walter De Maria’s Lightning Field, which inspired the road trip.
