The tousled elegance of Christopher Bailey’s creative direction has now been bottled in a range of demi-bespoke fragrances offering a topographical narrative of the British Isles. To encapsulate that spirit, “from the outdoors to our famously unreliable weather,” Bailey enlisted perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who distilled the region’s landscapes into seven blends with varying essential-oil concentrations. “The advantage of being an outsider is seeing things more clearly,” Zinzi Clemmons says over coffee at her Culver City apartment. WHEN THE WORLD IS IN CRISIS, A PANTSUIT HAS always asserted itself on the front lines of empowered style. To mark Vogue’s one hundred twentyfifth anniversary this year, we asked a number of artists “What is beauty?”—a Vogue question if ever there was one. The idea was to have them make images we could reproduce to raise money for the HIV/AIDS charities God’s Love We Deliver and Born Free (one American, one African). Eleven artists, including John Baldessari, Julie Mehretu, Maurizio Cattelan, and Beatriz Milhazes, signed on, and the always creative fashion house Marni agreed to collaborate by using the artworks on limited-edition tote bags and T-shirts. It was a shock of pink that caught the eye of Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga’s coolly subversive creative director, as he sifted through the brand’s archive. To fete the label’s centennial, a rose-and-white floral textile—draped by Mr. Balenciaga in 1964 into a springy dress—was given new life as a gathered, puff-pastry party frock for fall 2017.
