I have always loved the Lido, its provincial side — close to Venice but without the disadvantages,” says American fashion designer Rick Owens. Owens, with his wife and business partner Michèle Lamy, became a regular visitor to the region when he relocated his manufacturing to nearby Concordia more than a decade ago. “It’s two hours from the factory that makes my clothes. I spend at least a week here every month and, often, most of the summer. Particularly from those invested in brick-and-mortar shops — the once-calculable space of the sell in which all fashion and fixtures channelled desire into a till that ka-chinged merrily to the capture of money. That was back in the late 20th century, when transactions were linear, led by the brand and typically boxed with all the BS of life-defining benefits. For an illustration of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling fable, it’s hard to go past this elegant apartment in leafy Østerbro, Copenhagen, a mere suburb away from where the master storyteller once lived. It stood empty and unloved for a year until Christian Klinge, owner of creative branding agency Entry Global, and his partner Sarah Fitzgerald, a midwife, sensed its potential and transformed it into a graceful swan. Its luminescent, French-inspired interiors, a celebration of lighting in all its forms, came about through their grand vision and sheer hard work, with the couple doing much of the renovating themselves. The brief for the restoration and renovation of a Georgian townhouse in London’s South Kensington was to incorporate the client’s love of modernism but still respect the property’s age. Interior designer Alice B Davies and architect Jennifer Jammears undertook the project during Davies’ time as creative director at Minale and Mann. The duo restored the original architectural details using heritage techniques, and gave the home an unexpected contemporary feel with a dark, inky wall colour by Farrow & Ball. My dream bathroom is a space that has none of the things you’d find in a common bathroom. It should go beyond utility and into the realm of experience and escape. It’s an intimate space and should remind you of that fact. The room should encompass a layer of mystery, a layer of calm and a layer of discovery. You want to feel both familiar and foreign in the same space. In my ideal bathroom, the basin and bath would consist of a monumental ceramic glazed form that feels almost childlike. Ann Demeulemeester made her name in the fashion world with bold, asymmetric tailored silhouettes that constantly traversed the themes of light and dark, romantic and rock chick. Now, the Belgian designer is playing the same game with a new collection of tableware and lighting for Belgian brand Serax. Asked to recount the when and where of this Melbourne mansion dropping into his design lap, architect Travis Walton thinks back to 2014 and one of those storied New York bars where fabulous creatures hold court and Old Fashioneds flow. Before Jaune cofounders and architects Marine Delaloy and Paula Alvarez de Toledo overhauled this Paris apartment, it was an awkwardly partitioned space. The firm’s brief was to bring light into all the rooms and open up the living area for a new perspective. Jaune’s signature style combines the smart use of volume with a penchant for natural materials. This project blends the soft hues of Calacatta d’Oro marble, oak and unfinished brass that will develop a patina over time. There is a cinematic quality to the way daylight distils into every corner of British fashion designer Bella Freud’s West London apartment, allowing key furniture, sculptures and artworks to take centrestage in an otherwise uncluttered interior. “I wanted it to be quite spare in feeling and not too done,” says Freud. “With this kind of dreamy light and soft shadows, it feels almost playful.” The home sits in the back lot of a former industrial warehouse, which Freud had previously converted into a studio on the ground floor and a house above where her former husband, writer James Fox, still lives. The brief to interior design studio Las 2 Mercedes was to create a cosy and practical house in Madrid without losing sight of good design. “The owner is a cooking fanatic, making the kitchen a priority,” says Mercedes Valdenebro. “It was essential to make it a comfortable and cheerful space that could easily connect to the rest of the house.” The original clay floor with pieces of white marble was retained and Moroccan zellige tiles were added to the mix.
