10 At dawn on April 1st 1536, Henry VIII woke his wife Anne Boleyn and told her that she had been found guilty of Treason and Incest, and was to be executed that very morning. The unsuspecting Queen fell for the ruse hook, line and sinker, and Henry kept the joke going right until the moment the executioner’s axe fell on her neck. As Anne’s head landed in the basket, the King cried out “April Fool!”, and all his courtiers pointed at her and laughed. However, the joke was on Henry, for the beheading was delayed, and actually took place at one minute after midday, when it no longer counted.
