The Friend (Riverhead), Sigrid Nunez’s seventh novel, marks a departure for the author, whose past work has trodden territory such as class, friendship, and sexuality, often with a historical bent. The Friend covers equally meaningful ground, but it does so on four paws. In this slim but pitch-perfect novel, a writer loses her best friend and mentor suddenly and without explanation. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey took more than four years to develop and make, at a cost of more than $10 million—a formidable price tag in mid-1960s Hollywood. Kubrick’s project promised the moon and then some, but executives at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer feared they had a disaster on their hands when the picture was finally ready for release, 50 years ago, in the spring of 1968. I feel like I’m the last independent musician standing,” says the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sufjan Stevens. “When I started out, I was naïve and ambitious. I sent demos around, but no one was interested.” They are now. It’s well documented that Kumail Nanjiani grew up adoring the Richard Curtis– Hugh Grant romantic comedies of the 90s, in particular Four Weddings and a Funeral. But what’s so appealing about Nan jia ni’s own romantic comedy, The Big Sick, which he wrote with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, and which is based on the story of their courtship, is that it is sui generis, wearing no obvious influences on its sleeve. “We wanted to take the tropes of the rom-com and tell a different kind of story,” says Nanjiani. “Sort of like what Jordan Peele did with Get Out. The idea to convene a summit of women filmmakers was an informal, modest one, yet it was born of a deep-seated frustration. And it all began because Allison Anders was pissed. It was late 1999, and Anders, the indie film director (Gas Food Lodging, Grace of My Heart) and a MacArthur “Genius” fellow, saw women being isolated and marginalized. Why did they have such trouble getting their movies produced? Why were men, after a flop, allowed to fail upward, but if a woman’s film was successful, it was viewed as an aberration? And why didn’t women in Hollywood know about the female pioneers who had shaped the business? On July 14, 1960, Jane Goo dall, a 26-year-old London debutante turned secretary with no university degree, scientific experience, or training in the field, embarked upon a lifelong dream. Her boss, Kenyan paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, sent her to conduct a pioneering study of chimpanzees in Tanzania, “with the hope that a better understanding of chimpanzee behavior might provide us with a window on our past,” she later remembered. She took along binoculars, a notebook, and her 54-year-old mother, Vanne Morris-Goodall. Two years later, National Geographic dispatched a 25-year-old wildlife cameraman, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to record Goodall’s work. In the spring of 1950, Pierre Gruneberg, a robust 19-year-old Parisian on a hitchhiking quest to find temporary employment, walked into the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, a Belle Époque confection overlooking the Mediterranean.
