Years ago, a favourite uncle gifted me five or six 1930s cricket books he’d collected as a child including Charlie Macartney’s My Cricketing Days. It was the only one with a dust-wrapper and shows ‘The Governor-General’ striking a straight drive with menacing ferocity. Macartney loved to hit the first ball of the match straight back at the bowler. The harder the better. It’s an original Herbert Fishwick, taken with a revolutionary telescopic lens during the 1920-21 summer which Macartney dominated. Known as the father of modern sports photography, Fishwick’s action photographs are clear and dynamic taken even from long range, outside the pickets, sitting with the crowd.
