Taped in London and Paris with contributions from Tony Allen, John Paul Jones and Toumani Diabaté, Diawara’s acoustic debut showcases her softly soulful voice and gorgeous melodic gift. Its lilting charm slips in hard truths, such as “Sowa”, with its plea, born from experience, against the forced adoption of children. 8/10
FENFO (WAGRAM/MONTUNO, 2018)
The title means “Something to say” in Bambara, and the single “Nterini” sympathetically follows a migrant’s journey. Co-producer Matthieu Chedid helps stir funk and dance elements into a sleeker, expanded pop sound, but the bereft ballad “Den Do”, with only Diawara’s electric guitar and Vincent Ségal’s cello, is as affecting as anything. 8/10
