Cass McCombs’ third album begins with the same alarm sound that closed its predecessor, but otherwise, it was a reinvention. Containing his strongest songs up to that point, including the autobiographical mysteries of “Lionkiller” and the Tarot-referencing “Wheel Of Fortune”, Dropping The Writalso showed off his love for The Smiths and The Cure on “Crick In My Neck”. 8/10

Following the folky Catacombs, McCombs turned to darker currents with these eight long, slow tracks. The sorrowful, soulful “County Lines” is, somewhat bizarrely, his best-known song, but the rest is just as intoxicating, from the tranquilised Beach Boys balladry of “Saturday Song” to the two-chord invocations of “The Lonely Doll” and the mournful “Memory’s Stain”, which closes with an epic bass-clarinet solo.…
