My relationship with recording changed in 2010, when I decided it wasn’t the best use of time. Narada Michael Walden met Aretha in the early 1980s and helmed her 1985 smash, Who’s Zoomin’ Who? . The two worked together for more than 30 years, with Walden producing and writing for her and even playing in her touring band. But there they are, hidden in thickets of woozy, chorused guitar and delivered in eerie falsetto. “Once again/It’s Bostyn and his friend Dobsyn,” Connan Mockasin sang, as if a powerful equine tranquilliser was about to kick in, on “It’s Choade My Dear”, the second track on 2011’s Forever Dolphin Love. Had you started the new album before you got ill? I had started on it before and it became a different album after. But I wouldn’t say the illness had an outsized effect on the LP. He’s maybe best known as the bass constant in Magazine, whose lurching “Parade” earns a place here as an Adamson/Dave Formula co-write, and through his three years with the Bad Seeds, represented by “From Her To Eternity”. But with his 1988 debut, Moss Side Story, Adamson secured his niche as a solo composer (and player) of imagistic music with a widescreen sweep, drawing on ’50s film noir, ’60s spy movie and ’70s Blaxploitation scores, adding humour and droll lasciviousness. How did your native and chosen homes influence the record? Kansas City is the nest I grew in, and LA is the big city I flew off to. I don’t know that I pulled consciously from either place; they make their way into what I do because they are my past and my current surroundings. What do you find foreign about LA? You drive a lot in both the Midwest and LA, except in LA there can be insane traffic. I’ve always loved driving, though. A lot of ideas come to me while doing it. So that was a natural transition. There’s a real-time dynamism on this LP. How so? You’ve got to live out the record just like you live in the world: you just wake up in the morning and that’s kind of how you should play music and perform it. Writing is another thing, but these days it’s pretty open. Before, I might have thought too much ahead of time about a song having a beginning, middle and end, and even then I still couldn’t fully predict how it would come out. ONE of the unexpected treats of 1983’s Serious Moonlight Tour was a guest appearance by Bowie’s former guitarist Mick Ronson. The one-time Spider From Mars was working as a session player and producer, overseeing a new project by Canadian singer Lisa Dalbello, when the tour played Toronto’s CNE Grandstand on September 3.
