After playing in early versions of The Clash, The Damned and more, Hynde and her Hereford boys spring fully formed with a thrilling mix of hard-hitting new wave (the angular “The Phone Call” and “Tattooed Love Boys”) and melodic, ’60s-influenced pop (“Up The Neck”, the sublime “Kid”). Still her masterpiece. 9/10
PRETENDERS II
SIRE, 1981
A little rushed, but the second – and final – album by the original lineup of Hynde, Chambers, Farndon and Honeyman-Scott is still a strong effort, with highlights including the bittersweet “Talk Of The Town” and the XTC-esque “Day After Day”. 8/10
