IN RECENT YEARS, it has been common practice to lament an absence of modern protest songs. “Where are the new Bob Dylans?” rail the newspaper columnists and online commenters, after a cursory, disappointed search for politically engaged musicians of the 21st century. Our evidence suggests, however, that these people haven’t been looking very hard. To usher in 2017, Uncut’s team of writers have picked 50 critical protest songs of the past decade or so (presented here in near chronological order): a formidable catalogue of dissent that confronts police brutality, pointless wars, misogyny, racism, gun fetishism, financial iniquities, environmental calamities and much more.
