A Valley of Origins
P-Valley, the TV show, originates from Pussy Valley, a 2015 play from African-American playwright Katori Hall, which centres on the lives of four female strippers who live in rural Mississippi and perform nightly at a local strip club, firing up patrons’ imaginations through the poetry and athleticism of the live pole-dancing they showcase. Beneath the glittery veneer of the bright lights lies a gritty exploration of the lives of African-American, white, gay, straight, young and old denizens, who are being smothered by poverty, jealousy, abuse, homophobia, power imbalances, racism, abandonment and sexploitation. Emerging from the rubble of their lives, these resilient women pursue happiness, stability, motherhood, independence, romance and personal integrity.
