An industrial estate in Bridgend, South Wales, has been transformed into the vibrant world of London’s Soho in 1918, with cobbled streets, market stalls and busy nightclubs, as TV&Satellite Week visits the set of BBC1’s uncompromising period drama Dope Girls.
Inspired by Marek Kohn’s nonfiction book of the same name, the Peaky Blinders-style six-parter begins just as World War One is ending, and details the era’s London nightlife, criminal underworld and burgeoning drugs trade.
At the heart of the drama is spirited Kate Galloway, played by Julianne Nicholson, who is evicted from her countryside home following her husband’s death. With nowhere else to go, cash-strapped Kate and her unsettled teenage daughter Evie (Eilidh Fisher), who has been at boarding…
