Frederick Forsyth was inspired to write his first novel, The Day of the Jackal, by his time working in Paris as a journalist in the 1960s and covering the real-life attempted assassination of French President Charles de Gaulle. The thriller was published in 1971 and became a bestseller, launching a literary career for Forsyth, who, now aged 86, is a consulting producer on the new drama. In 1973, a film version, directed by Fred Zinnemann, and starring Edward Fox as the icy Jackal, earned seven BAFTA nominations and is still regarded as a classic of British cinema. ‘I was brought up on the Edward Fox film and I read the book a long time ago and adored them both,’ explains Redmayne. ‘But our version is a different beast.’…
