Fauna has a murky family history that may be tied to 1947’s unsolved Black Dahlia murder. “To shoot a noir thriller on glorious Kodak film…I’d wanted to play in that world, with those mid-century tropes, for a long time,” says Pine, who also serves as an executive producer on the limited series. Her dad’s death leads Jira to search for her birth mother, Southside city alderman candidate Tia Young (Emayatzy Corinealdi), who isn’t sure she wants to be found. For proof, look no further than The Loudest Voice in the Room, Showtime’s eight-part drama about the late Roger Ailes featuring an almost unrecognizable Russell Crowe in the lead role. Voice explores how the Fox News founder propelled his network to the top—and how he was forced to walk away in 2016 after multiple employees, including anchor Gretchen Carlson (played by Naomi Watts), accused him of sexual harassment. Welcome back to The Twilight Zone—a new show we confess we know little about. But that’s kind of perfect, isn’t it? Because according to the 1959–64 original, the Twilight Zone is all about imagination. This fourth reboot is executive produced by X-Men: Apocalypse scribe Simon Kinberg and writer-director-actor Jordan Peele, who also narrates à la creator Rod Serling. Hulu gets in on the true-crime trend with this anthology about seemingly ordinary types—who aren’t at all what they appear. Patricia Arquette plays Dee Dee Blanchard, a Missouri single mom who lied that her totally healthy daughter Gypsy (Joey King) had brain damage, cancer, asthma—you name it—and scored charity from it. “They looked like a loving mother and daughter,” says cowriter and executive producer Michelle Dean, “but they had a big secret that eventually tore them apart.” Dee Dee even pushed Gypsy in a wheelchair. Executive producer Bruce Miller, who’s deep into filming the Emmy-winning drama’s third round, has an uplifting reveal about renegade handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) and her future in dystopian Gilead: “The season is about resistance—June resisting and June fighting. After a couple of seasons of being beaten down, she’s had quite enough. She’s finding ways to rebel.” She’s motivated, having sent her baby to freedom in the July finale while staying behind to rescue her other daughter. When it debuted in 2017, limited series Big Little Lies—based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 bestseller—was supposed to be just that: limited. Then it hooked viewers with a well-crafted murder mystery involving a circle of ladies in Monterey, California. “Once the show aired, there was a hunger to explore these women more,” executive producer Bruna Papandrea says. Almost everyone came back on board—including original stars and exec producers Reese Witherspoon (Madeline) and Nicole Kidman (Celeste)—to reveal what’s happened since the eclectic group covered up the killing of Celeste’s abusive husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgård).
