A slight ray of sunshine for consumers is that the National Treasury has drawn up a list of 19 food items that are exempt from tax. While this measure goes a small way to cushioning the financial blow for consumers, debt experts, opposition parties and civil society groups are lobbying to have more essential items added to this list. If they get their way, items like feminine hygiene products, soap, school uniforms, flour, candles, basic medicine and prepaid airtime would be added to the list of zero-rated VAT items. But until a review that is currently underway into the matter has been concluded, these are the foodstuff that you won’t be paying any tax on:
