I was about to pen this ed’s letter, when a reader Thandolwethu Yokwana (pictured below) dropped me a mail. Xinran often travels across China to interview women. In 1997, she moved to London and began writing stories of the women she’d met on her journeys. Her first novel, The Good Women of China, published in 2002, was a bestseller. She’s written a number of books since. A recent study by pharmaceutical company Pharma Dynamics shows that the demands of working and raising kids take their toll on working mothers. Company spokesperson Wilmi Hudsonberg explains: “Between the stresses of work, travelling, job advancement and motherhood, there are often no reserves left for mothers.” The survey polled 900 working moms across South Africa aged 25 to 55. I was 15 when I discovered the word “feminist” and embraced it. I loved finding out there were women all over the world who agreed on the unfairness of what we first called sexism and later patriarchy, and were trying to end it.
