HEAVY FINE FOR POLLUTER
Welsh Water (WW) has been fined £180,000 for polluting the River Clywedog in North Wales in 2018, causing the death of more than 3,000 fish, including trout and salmon parr.
WW, which was also ordered to pay more than £25,000 costs, illegally discharged crude settled sewage from a wastewater treatment plant affecting five miles of the river.
Environment regulator Natural Resources Wales, which took the legal action against WW, said, “We hope this fine will send out a clear message that environmental legislation is to be taken seriously and that damaging the environment, whether deliberately, or out of negligence, comes with consequences.”
