The February 2017 edition of T&S carried an article on a new salmon fly called the Strawberry Mackenzie. This brightly coloured fly, designed by myself and Iain Wilson of the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells, created a certain amount of comment, as it was different from the run-of-the-mill ones that frequent most fishers’ fly-boxes. Despite relatively limited use, it has been successful on all four of the large Scottish rivers, and also the Helmsdale, Halladale, Avon and Berriedale.
This photograph shows a fish, hooked on the said fly, that I caught last year on the Haffjardara in Iceland. The river had risen considerably overnight, and my gillie, Thor, suggested that I should try the Strawberry Mackenzie, as the water had become somewhat coloured.
