You’ve had it happen: you made a perfect set in a perfect location, smack dab in the middle of several intersecting furbearer travelways. Critter sign is abundant. It’s an easy place to set and check, and it’s shielded from view. Perfect. But when you check it the next morning, there’s that empty trap bed where you’d so artfully buried your trap the day before. On a wintery morning during an early chapter of my trapping career, I had my favorite hound with me and was searching the predawn mountains looking for a set of cat tracks to keep us occupied for the day. A fresh layer of snow had fallen earlier in the December night and tracking conditions were ideal. Up ahead in the glow of my searchlights I could see where something had entered the road. As I rolled up to get a closer look at the fresh tracks, I had to scratch my head. I’m trapping a little mud-bank ditch. I can’t wade the goldarn thing because the muck and mire are too deep, so I have to walk the bank to trap it. There are a few muskrats here, but mostly I’m looking for raccoons and mink. Besides the mud, there is another reason that I can’t wade that ditch. It is in the floodplain of a major river. When the river floods it deposits free-floating logs, some of them end up crossways in the ditch and it is hard to get over them. But sometimes Mother Nature throws a little help my way, too. As you develop a trapper’s eye, you learn to spot locations quickly. And even a blind trapper could’ve seen this location. One of those logs had floated perpendicular…
